Best simile ever

August 12th, 2005

From the archives of Gas Guy, discussing a day at work trying to deal with a terrible hangover.

"I feel like a 1980′s AFC Champion in the Super Bowl: I’m plummetting out of the game and haven’t a clue what do about it besides cringe, pout and huff."

This one almost made me snort coffee out of my nose.

Mathematical Knitting.

August 12th, 2005

Mathematics and crafting collide.  This is pretty slick.  I can’t knit but it is almost worth learning now that I know I can whip up my own mobius strips.

Bored on the Phone? Beware Jerk-O-Meter (AP)

August 11th, 2005

Not sure what to do with this one.  Longer article than Yahoo usually puts out but the extra information doesn’t clear much up.  The short version… MIT lad is making software that will monitor a participants interest in  a conversation over the phone.  If a persons score drops to far (not interested) they will be given a message that they are being a jerk.  Potentially could be applied to the other end of the conversation as well so you could get a message telling you that you should hang up on someone.

And yes, Jerk-O-Meter is the actual name of this thing.

Bored on the Phone? Beware Jerk-O-Meter (AP) – AP – Ever wonder if that spouse, friend or co-worker on the other end of the phone is really paying attention? The "Jerk-O-Meter" may hold the answer.

The iMuse high-end home entertainment system

August 11th, 2005

I belive the phrase is "homminna hommina homminna".  Yes, its expensive.  But this is the kind of rig I want in my home before I die.  A master storage server that can distribute media to multiple rooms.  Terminals in the rooms that can rip media back to the server.  Delicious!

The iMuse high-end home entertainment system

iMuse rack

Nah, this isn’t the same iMUSE that used to power music in old school Lucasarts SCUMM-based adventure games—this iMuse media system takes dead aim at the custom media server market players like Kaleidescape and Chord with their much more box-centric (and apparently cost effective) solution. Each room gets an iMuse Sierra PC (which you may recognize is the same media PC that Gateway and Alienware, etc. OEM), which run Windows XP and iMuse’s media platform software. Each can play back (and rip) media to the central server, the Summit, which itself stores all its data on expandable with up to 14TB in Avalanche firewire RAID arrays. The iMuse distributes to each room via Gigabit Ethernet (or WiFi), and also supports 1080p, FLAC and OGG, DVR functionality, Podcasting, and a whole bunch of other niceties that the competition doesn’t have or is are asking a whole lot more cash for. Still, $15,000 is a little steep for a four-room anything solution, so know what you’re getting into (not that we think you wouldn’t).

Atom feeds for the News Aggregator

August 11th, 2005

Next project on the back end of the site:  Find the Drupal patch that allows atom feeds into the news aggregator.  Between Waiter Rant and Gas Guy I need my dose of everyday dharma.

I’ve seen the patch once.  Just need to get my hands on it and sit down with the offending bit of code.

Mopah: the iPod powered scooter

August 11th, 2005

Can’t decide if this is uber cool or just a little sad.  I know the iPod is neat.  But can it really be so pervassive in some people’s lives that they can use it as a key to their transportation?

Mopah: the iPod powered scooter

Mopah

No, really. The Mopah scooter actually uses your iPod’s unique serial number as its key, and won’t power on unless it’s docked. It rolls when you roll, turning you into a portable DJ. We know you wanna go out and buy one, but you can’t — unless you find an angel investor to help Michael Tseng to commercialize his senior thesis project.

Liquid Ass: It’s Not Perfume

August 10th, 2005

Blogging this only for the product name.  Please do not consider this an endorsement.

Liquid Ass: It’s Not Perfume

liquid-ass.jpgBuy a bottle of this and your whole housecan smell like my chair on these hot August days! Liquid Ass has genuine Butt Crack Flava and is apparently sure to clear out a girl’s locker room (??). Not sure the preoccupation with clearing young ladies out of enclosed spaces, but both StrangeNewProducts and the manufacturers attempt to scare girls away with Liquid Ass. Is there something else to this compound that someone isn’t telling us? Is Liquid Ass a nickname?

August 10th, 2005

I’ve asked before.  but why do all these weird things seem to happen in Germany?

Comic for 10 Aug 2005

August 10th, 2005

I don’t normally blog comics but For Better or Worse has been taking a pretty serious turn the last few days.  Seems Liz has a creepy co-worker who has been stalking her and has stepped up to some first degree harassment.  Not sure where the artist is taking this but its interesting to see this subject matter in a strip that normally focuses on the lighter side of domestic relationships.

Man Dies After 49 Hours of Computer Games (AP)

August 10th, 2005

Yes, I have obsessive stretches of gaming. But this is on another level.  49 straight hours of Starcraft? Let me make a suggestion based on a quote from a message board awhile back.

I found this great new MMORPG.  Its called Reality and while it does have some annoying features it is the best thing going.  The AI and the graphics are amazing.  The game world is huge and while its really hard to level up and the rules are a bit vauge, the social networking features will blow you away.

Man Dies After 49 Hours of Computer Games (AP) – AP – A 28-year-old South Korean man died of exhaustion in an Internet cafe after playing computer games non-stop for 49 hours, South Korean police said Wednesday.
