What’s Playing at Green Scissors Music: November

November 21st, 2003 by tamarin2087

Well, here we are almost to December and I haven’t posted the music for the month yet. So to make up for it I am offering a two for one special! Yes that’s right. This month Green Scissors will introduce you to two artists you probably haven’t heard before.

So without further ado, I am pleased to introduce: Shannon Campbell and MC Frontalot

At the top of our MP3 playlists is Miss Shannon Campbell. I found Shannon’s website through last month’s featured artist Scott Andrew and some collaborative work she did with him during their Blogathon to raise money for Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

In the tradition of not subjecting you to my own hackneyed assesments of artists, here is what MusikNetz.com says about Shannon’s music:

Shannon Campbell is a completely self-taught singer/songwriter of the folk persuasion located in Greenville, South Carolina. Although she has a distinct acoustic playing style, it’s her vocals that stand out, conveying powerful emotion with every word she sings. Her combination of an unapologetic stage presence and a personal, yet universal writing style captivates audiences each time she plays.

Check out her website for a startlingly large collection of downloadable MP3s that show off her vocal power and energy.

  • Tangled: Combining organ, guitar, congas, piano and some excellent vocals, Tangled rolls through an emotional turmoil of trying to decide what to do about a relationship that seems to offer as much struggle and pain as reward.
  • Bartender: A cover of an excellent Dave Matthews Band tune performed live with Nathan Davis helping out. Bartender is stripped down acoustic folk/rock at its best and really shows off Shannon’s skills
  • Song For Nathan: Another journey inside a struggling relationship, Song For Nathan looks for a way to resolve problems without causing any more pain.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, the second half of November’s double header is MC Frontalot. There wasn’t much I could find to describe Frontalot’s style, but linkmonger.net offers this snippet:

MC Frontalot is one of the new wave of nerdcore rappers. He down with nerd lingo and he hits the beat like a cop who just won bingo… but better.

To this I will add my own 2 cents. Frontalot is a one man music factory. His sounds remind me of the carefree days of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince with enough current politics, self mockery, and counter rap culture to make me laugh and think all at the same time. Check out the website for even more work from this truly unique artist.

Note: While Frontalot is not what I would term a foul mouthed linguist, there are enough blue words in the songs to make headphones very advisable if you are listening at work.

  • Message No. 419: An ode to the Nigerian money laundering scam emails. Slick, funny and something we’ve all wanted to do at least once when we get those pleading emails from foreign royalty.
  • Gonna Be Your Man: Winner of a Songfight competition from July 2003. Gonna be your man explains why you should never let a rapper make a bedside visit.
  • Crime Spree: Deep down in our dark cornered places, we’ve all wanted to be a gangster at one time or another. Frontalot explains why he should be the most wanted rapper in America.
