Stephen Lynch has a really interesting article entitled The Geek
Age. A cut-down version ran in the New York Post in May 20, but thanks
to the magic of the interweb, you can find the full version here.
Lynch
brings up some good points, largely based on the notion that with the
presumptive end of Star Wars and the fact that there will be no new
Star Trek show on the air next year (for the first time in 18 years,
believe it or not), it may well be the end of the geek era, at least for a while. It makes for some interesting reading.
Chords of truth
One thing that he didn’t mention but that I believe is just as
indicative of the geek culture rising in the last few years. The
HitchHikers movie finally got made. I can’t imagine it hurt when
studio execs looked out and saw the winds of change blowing.
I love it. Long live geek culture. I for one do not mind
telling people that there were 7 Istari but only 3 are mentioned in
Lord of the Rings. (bonus points for the name of the third)
I for one do not
Gandalf the Gray, Saruman the White, and Radagast the Brown, yes?
